When the Snow Geese came landing in my front yard for the first time this year, I thought that this was a prime example of loss of habitat for these poor birds chased from their traditional migration grounds.
After some research I found out quite a different story...
The Snow Geese have adapted to eating leftovers from agricultural fields and now are looking for man-made flats where their habit of digging in help them find good food in abundance.
As a result their numbers are increasing steadily since 1975 and they are much healthier and stronger than before.
So, really, what I am seeing is an invasion.
But I don't mind all the hoopla and the noise: they are magnificent birds and quite interesting to watch. Not everybody seems to enjoy as much though. Talk to the crows and the Canadian geese!
